FOUNDATIONS

Built on Strong Foundations

Every organization is shaped by the people, ideas, and experiences that come before it. Strata Learning was created with a deep respect for those foundations and a commitment to carrying them forward in meaningful ways.

Today, Strata Learning supports a network of early learning, school-age, and camp programs serving children and families throughout the San Francisco Peninsula. While each program has its own identity and community, they are united by shared values, educational principles, and a commitment to helping children thrive.

The Happy Hall Legacy

The roots of Strata Learning can be traced to Happy Hall Schools, an organization that served Peninsula families for decades and became known for its strong relationships, dedicated educators, and child-centered approach to learning.

Under the leadership of founder Mary Lou Johnson, Happy Hall established a reputation for creating environments where children felt safe, supported, and encouraged to grow. Her philosophy emphasized the importance of caring relationships, consistent leadership, and programs designed around the developmental needs of children.

These values became the foundation upon which future growth was built.

While education continues to evolve, the belief that children thrive when surrounded by caring adults, engaging experiences, and strong communities remains central to our work today.

Today

Building the Next Layer

More than seven decades after its founding, Strata Learning continues to build on the values that have guided the organization from the beginning: strong relationships, educational excellence, community partnership, and a belief in the potential of every child.

Building Something Connected

One thing that makes Strata Learning unique is the opportunity to support children across multiple stages of development.

While many organizations focus on a single age group, our programs serve children from infancy through adolescence through early learning, before and after school programs, camps, and enrichment experiences.

This allows us to think about education as a journey rather than a series of disconnected experiences. A child may begin in one of our early learning programs, continue into school-age care, participate in camps, and remain connected to the people, values, and experiences that have supported their growth along the way.

Although each program serves a different age group and community, they are connected by a shared commitment to child development, strong relationships, and meaningful learning experiences.

Growing with Purpose

Growth has never been the goal. Impact has.

Over the years, the organization has expanded into new communities, developed new partnerships, and created new opportunities for children and families. Each step has been guided by a commitment to quality, sustainability, and long-term community benefit.

Whether opening a new location, launching a new program, or forming a new partnership, we ask the same questions:

  • Does this benefit children?

  • Does this support families?

  • Does this strengthen our educators?

  • Can we maintain the quality and relationships that define our programs?

These questions help ensure that growth remains intentional and aligned with our values.

Supporting the People Behind the Programs

Exceptional programs are built by exceptional people.

Behind every classroom, camp, and after-school program is a team of educators, leaders, and support staff working to create meaningful experiences for children.

Strata Learning invests in training, coaching, curriculum development, leadership development, and operational systems that allow educators to focus on what matters most: supporting children.

We believe that strong organizations are built by supporting the people who make the work possible every day.

The Next Layer

The name Strata reflects our belief that growth happens in layers.

Children develop through a series of experiences, relationships, challenges, and opportunities that build upon one another over time. Organizations grow in much the same way.

Today, Strata Learning carries forward more than seventy years of history while continuing to evolve to meet the needs of modern children, families, educators, and communities.

The foundation was laid by those who came before us. Our responsibility is to continue building thoughtfully, ensuring that the next layer is as strong as the ones beneath it.
